How to Launch Your First OpenAI Ads Campaign: Step-by-Step for Shopify

Abstract: From Zero to Live in ChatGPT

OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager [1] means any US Shopify brand can now run ads inside ChatGPT — no agency, no enterprise minimum. But the platform has a specific setup order, a few one-time-only credentials, and a couple of silent blockers that stall first campaigns. This is the complete launch sequence, in the order that avoids rework.

1. Before You Start: The Checklist

You'll finish faster with these ready:

  • Access to ads.openai.com [1] (self-serve registration for US businesses)
  • A payment method and a square brand logo file
  • Your Shopify store connected to Aimerce [2] (for conversion events and the product feed)
  • A password manager open — OpenAI shows two different secrets exactly once each

2. Step 1 — Register and Complete Account Setup

Create your advertiser account, then immediately knock out the two items behind the "Ads cannot serve until you finish account setup" banner:

  1. Billing — add payment information
  2. Account logo — upload your brand mark

Everything else (feeds, pixels, even campaigns) can be configured while these are missing, but nothing delivers until they're done — the most common "why isn't my campaign spending?" answer.

3. Step 2 — Wire Up Conversion Tracking First

Do measurement before your first campaign, not after — OpenAI's algorithm starts learning from your very first click.

  1. In Tools → Conversions (Data Source tab), click Copy Pixel ID.
  2. Click Manage conversion keys → + Create new key, name it aimerce, copy the sk-svcacct-... key — shown once.
  3. In Aimerce's OpenAI Setup, paste both values and click Submit. Aimerce sends a validation event confirming the pipe works, then streams all seven standard events (order_created, checkout_started, items_added, contents_viewed, page_viewed, lead_created, registration_completed) server-side.
  4. Back in Tools → Conversions → Conversion Events, click + Create and register at least Purchase (order_created) against your pixel, with the default 30-day window.

4. Step 3 — Upload Your Product Feed

Catalog placements are the highest-intent format for ecommerce, so get your feed live before the campaign:

  1. Tools → Feeds → + Create Feed — enter merchant name and currencies.
  2. From the feed row's ··· → Edit SFTP Connection, copy Host (sftp.commerce.openai.com), Username, Root path, Port (443), and Generate password (shown once).
  3. Paste all five into Aimerce's OpenAI Setup → Product Feed and click Sync now. Aimerce uploads your Shopify catalog ingestion-clean — non-empty descriptions, two-decimal prices — and keeps it synced.

5. Step 4 — Build the Campaign

  1. In Campaigns, create a new campaign.
  2. Objective: choose Clicks (CPC) for ecommerce — you pay per valid click. (The Reach/CPM objective suits brand awareness.)
  3. Budget & pacing: set a daily budget you can sustain for 4–6 weeks; underpowered week-long tests produce noise, not decisions.
  4. Bid: early advertiser reports put workable CPCs around $3–5; bidding well below the clearing range mostly buys non-delivery.
  5. Context hints (ad group level): describe the conversations where your product belongs — categories, use cases, comparisons — like a brief to a salesperson, not a keyword list.
  6. Creative: upload ads with specific, descriptive copy; the model matches semantically, so vague copy shrinks your eligible contexts.

6. Step 5 — Attach Conversion Events to the Campaign

The step everyone misses: registered conversion events do nothing until attached. Open Campaigns → Edit Campaign, scroll to the conversion events section, pick your event(s) from Select an event, click Add event, then Save. Without this, the campaign neither optimizes for nor reports your purchases.

7. Step 6 — Launch and Verify

  1. Set the campaign live.
  2. Confirm spend begins pacing within a day; if not, revisit bids and the account-setup banner.
  3. Place a test order and confirm the order_created event lands on your pixel.
  4. Give the algorithm 2–4 weeks of conversion data before judging — and judge with your own first-party attribution alongside OpenAI's reporting.

8. Conclusion: Order of Operations Is Everything

A first OpenAI Ads campaign succeeds or stalls on setup sequence: account setup → conversions → feed → campaign → attach events → launch. With Aimerce [2] handling the server-side events and feed sync, the technical middle of that sequence is a ten-minute copy-paste — leaving your attention where it belongs, on offer and creative.
